FEDE BOLSÓN

A weathered hippy in the Patagonia mountains made his humble house a home for any struggling heart that rambled through his town. At Fede's place we found a common ground.

He drove a taxi down those dusty gravel roads, and with the winds of El Bolsón, he'd pick you up, and then he'd help you travel on. Yeah, Fede catered to the ones who roam.

Oh, ai. Oh, oh. Oh, ai. Oh, oh.

His room a tent pitched on the wood floor of his attic, and all the floor space that remained was for folks like us who'd found a place to stay. His open arms gave shelter from the rain.

The only real rooms in his house were for his mother and his daughter of 15, he cared for them if only with a meager means. In certain ways he let 'em live like queens.

Oh, ai. Oh, oh. Oh, ai. Oh, oh.

I give thanks to folks like Fede, to those who've got a story to tell. And even thought their lives aren't perfect, Lord, at least they live 'em well.

His sanctuary was a refuge in the mountains, el Refugio Retamal. Be it spring or be it fall, he'd make that haul. He listened to the mountain when it called.

That's where he woke up on the day before he died. It was the last place that he went, he hiked back down, and then he bid the world goodbye. And he left a many friend back here to cry. Well, I'm glad to say he was a friend of mine.

I give thanks to folks like Fede, to those who've got a story to tell. And even though their lives aren't perfect, Lord, at least they live 'em well.

TELL ME WHY

1997's when I had the rude awakening that I would be a gay man all my life.
Conservative tobacco town; the snickering and scornful frowns consumed my mind. I felt I'd rather die.

Tell me why I didn't have to right to grow up like you other folks. I led my life in fright.
Tell me why. I'd really like to know. I guess that's just the way the story goes.

1998 I found that music brought me harmony inside. The five string banjo set me free.
But born and bred of southern stock, I quickly saw a paradox: respect and yet intolerance for me.

Tell me why it's better not to tell, to hide my true identity and live a secret Hell.
Tell me why. I'd really like to know. I guess that's just the way the story goes.

As the years go by, I find forgiveness for the ignorance that locked me in a prison of self-loathe.
And after time in foreign lands and cultural discovery, I've let go of that grudge against my home.

But still there is this question in me, scratching at my heart and gnawing at my bones. It just won't let me be. I said it just won't let me be. No it won't leave me alone.

Tell me why so many chose to fight to strip us of our dignity and simply out of spite. Tell me why. I'd really like to know. I guess that's just the way the story goes.

Joe Troop es un músico nómade: viaja desde hace años por el mundo, y ahora reside en la Argentina. Heredero de la tradición norteamericana del bluegrass, nos ofrece en su primer disco una variedad de canciones y piezas instrumentales en las que canta en inglés y castellano. Partiendo del folk del sur de Estados Unidos, su trabajo es un recorrido que no olvida nunca el punto de partida.

La traducción del título A traveler’s sketches es Los bocetos de un viajero y representa cabalmente el concepto del disco. Como en un cuaderno en el que el viajero va guardando dibujos y apuntes de cada sitio al que sus pies lo llevan, no cuesta nada imaginarse a Joe Troop, con el banjo y el violín a sus espaldas recorriendo el mundo. Su espíritu inquieto y sus deseos de aprender lo han llevado desde Winston-Salem, su ciudad natal en Carolina del Norte, a Andalucía, desde donde ha viajado con la música a Inglaterra, a Marruecos y finalmente a Japón. Allí residió un par de años, llegando a dominar el idioma japonés. Luego de unos años en su terruño, nuevamente ha decidido viajar, y desde comienzos de 2010 está en la Argentina. Así es que sus canciones pueden ser en inglés, pero narrar la vida de un hippie de El Bolsón, como en el track 2 o incluir un instrumento de viento tradicional japonés, o jugar con el flamenco que aprendió en sus años en el sur de España.

Todo es auténtico en Joe Troop y sin embargo al abordar la música desde el banjo o desde el violín aprendido en la práctica folklórica de la música estadounidense, todo remite a esa Carolina del Norte que lo vio nacer. El dúo que conformó aquí con Diego Sánchez en contrabajo, le permite una amplia gama de posibilidades rítmicas y tímbricas: puede ser una rápida danza usando el banjo y el contrabajo pizzicato, o una balada como en Lauril en la que se pasa al violín y ambos usan el arco. Sánchez es un instrumentista muy completo, su manejo en velocidad del arco, y en el registro más agudo, es realmente asombroso (escucharThey called him frog, track 9). En cuanto a la voz de Joe, es un cantante afinado y expresivo, con una dicción clara. Es muy rara su facilidad para pronunciar el castellano a la perfección, sobre todo en las vocales, que es donde suelen denunciarse los angloparlantes al intentar cantar en nuestro idioma. Se nota un cuidado trabajo con la pronunciación y que ha estudiado bien nuestro idioma.

A lo largo de las doce etapas de este viaje que es el disco, escuchamos las huellas que dejaron sus caminatas por la música andaluza, marroquí, china, japonesa, el jazz francés, el tango, la bossa y más, pero todo sobre la sólida base de su origen, de ese bluegrass cuyo color característico aportan el banjo y el violín, y la voz algo triste, dulce y apenas nasal de Joe. Un trabajo muy original que nos permite viajar con este músico ambulante desde su mirada curiosa; y desde una tradición sonora que no habíamos presentado antes. Vale la pena echar una mirada a esta tradición viva de la música norteamericana.
